How can I increase my vertical jump so that i can dunk?

Friday, October 16th, 2009

I’m 6’2" and training for basketball season. I want to be able to dunk and get stronger in order to be a better center. I bought some ankle weights and a jump rope to help my legs get some muscle as a suggestion from a friend. Does anybody have any other good workout suggestions? I dont want a website explaining what I COULD do but never actually explains what I should do. Just straight up excersises would be good.

Age-13 (June 15th, 1995)

Weight-about 163 pounds

Vertical- about 19 inches

Don’t know if this will help, but here are my basketball games stats this season.

Free Throw-80%

Field Goal-70%

100% Layups

If you really want to improve your Vertical jump, first you need to figure out what type of Jumper you are, a power jumper or a leaper, as using optimal biomechanics is just as important as having explosive muscle power. Next you need to figure out what type of power or strength you are lacking. The three basic types of strength are: Base strength, transitional power, and explosiveness or "Reactive" power, they are all different and must be trained in different ways. Now I know a lot of you are wondering what’s the difference between the three. Well in short Base Strength is how much weight you can move, Transitional Power is how fast you can move said weight and explosiveness is the maximum speed and distance you can move said weight with each single movement. A good Vertical Jump training routine will include the following exercises:

Base Strength
1: Traditional Squats and Pistol Squats
2: Deadlifts/base building olympic lifts
3: Lunges
4: Core Work (Functional Performance Core Strength= The ability to make your pelvis and spine "lock" and work as a single stable unit, not simply having a 6 pack or being able to do 100 crunches)
5: Stretching

Transitional Power:
1: Box Squats/Tempo Squats
2: Power Cleans
3: Push Press
4: Core Work
5: Stretching

Explosiveness:
1: Ballistic and jump squats
2: Traditional and Compound/Hybrid Plyometrics
3: Sprinting
4: Core Work
5: Stretching

You’ll also want to figure out which individual muscles/muscle groups are working inefficiently. You can figure this out by completing a full vertical jump test progression and a baseline fitness test to diagnose any muscle imbalances that you may have. Remember no matter what type of training program you do you must make sure that opposing muscles are strengthened and balanced (e.g. Quads and hamstrings, abs and lower back) so don’t skip the quad extensions and hamstring curls. If opposing muscles are not strengthened they will lead to weak links, energy leaks and imbalances will result in poor or slow improvement and raise the risk of injury significantly. Do a routine that combines plyomertic/bodyweight, free weight and or acceleration routines. Make sure you are consuming lots of protein to aid in muscle repair after tough workouts You’ll also want to replenish your bodies ATP and glycogen stores as they are the fuel for those type IIa and type IIb muscle fibers you will be (AKA FG and FOG) shredding during your workout. In order to gain inches you’ll need to tax your central nervous system and force your body to create new motor pathways. If you train correctly you should gain at least an inch a week. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7PxcPllTyRA

What do i need to do to be able to dunk by next school year?

Saturday, October 10th, 2009

I’m 5’8 and a half. I can touch the rim but barely. Right now i weigh 190 but i’ll probably weigh around 170 by the end of summer. I’m guessing i need to increase my vertical leap by 6 inches to be able to dunk. Does anyone have any drills or training advice that i can use?

Aside from genetic limitations, there are actually alot of things you can do to increase your vertical leap.

1. Stretch often, and after workouts.
2. Plyometric jumping workouts (these are basically repetitions of different jumping exercises onto boxes)
www.bodybuilding.com should have some routines
3. Rope-jumping or Jump rope
4. Donkey raises, calf raises, and high rep squats
again check www.bodybuilding.com for routines
5. Distance and interval running (not only with this build slow-twitch muscle fibers in your legs, but It will lower your body fat percentage)

I hope this helps, it worked for me!

suggestion on training programs to learn to dunk?

Thursday, October 8th, 2009

jus run alot, run all the way to ur public basketball court, about 5 months will give u 5 or 6 inces vertical…

what i did was play basketball all day everyday for atleast 4 hours, and try touching rim when im about to go home…

u should also go to an outside court with brick walls and when ur done chewing gum jump as high as u can and stick it there, next time u come back go explode even higher.

6 inches is alot to ask of ur body, and working hard is the price u pay.

How would it be possible for a man to slam dunk a basketball?

Tuesday, October 6th, 2009

I wanna train to be able to slam dunk a basketball. I’m 5’10 and weigh 280lbs. I could touch the rim but barely. Is there some training i could do to help me besides lose 30 lbs…

At your height and weight, touching the rim requires some very powerful legs. If you have fat to lose, try to lose it and it will help immensely.
As far as training is concerned, you need to try to get your squat max up to 1.5 times your bodyweight. Again, losing weight will help alot. As your strength:bodyweight ratio increases, other types of training can become effective. Ever heard of plyometrics? How about the power clean? Go to this site http://verticalleaptraining.blogspot.com it’s got great info, examples of plyometrics drills, and videos of power lifts.
