HAWAIIAN PARTY FOR CHILDREN

Hawaiian parties are all about athmosphere. You are trying to create the idea of a mini paradise. This can be hard for those of us that live in the UK where tropical rain is more usual than tropical sunshine.

Having said that there is no reason you should not plan a hawaiian themed party for your child’s birthday. Younger children up to the ages of 6 or 7 tend to like standard themes such as spiderman and pirates but once they get a bit older they are more open to other options.

Our first piece of advice for those who opt for an hawaiian theme is to try and host it at home. Creating a paradise island in the middle of a leisure centre can be quite a challenge. In our experience doing anything slighty different in an outside venue can be quite a challenge.

One of the items that will set your hawaiian party apart from a standard childrens party is the food and drink. Tropical punch (non alcoholic) is easy to make and perfect for the theme. Make sure you include plenty of fruit and spend some time “dressing” the glasses. Children just love a sugared rim and a cocktail umbrella. For safety reasons it maybe better to buy some plastic glasses just in case !

BBQ food should be your first choice but during the winter that can be a problem. Fish , coconuts and pineapple should all be considered. However  most children will just stick to a regular burger. It maybe a little too much to expect the guests to eat fish when they do not normally do so.

Whatever you decide to cook make sure the portions are not too big. At parties children get very excited and generally are very happy once there is cake, coke and party games.

DECORATIONS FOR AN HAWAIIAN PARTY

When people are thinking of hosting a fancy dress party there are many themes that come to mind but the one that seems to pop up on a regular basis is an hawaiian party. It is a theme that is best suited to relaxed and informal events.

As with any party you will need to set an appropriate party ambiance. It is a little like designing a set for a play. This does not have to be expensive and if you buy wisely you will be able to store the decorations for use at other events.

If you are not the creative type and find the idea of decoratiing your home or party venue for an hawaiian party then try to enlist the help of friends. We want to stress this point as effort put into decorating a venue will be noticed and the guests will respond positively.

The best way to start preparing the decorations is to get into the right frame of mind. In the UK it is probably easier to thing of the carribbean and golden sand. Throw in a bit of Miami Vice and you will be there or there abouts. It might not be hawaii but it is close enough. Of course don’t forget the cocctails.

To set the tone for the party turn down any bright lights and replace them with sets of string lights, candles and garden torches (if outside). The next thing on your list should be the decoration of tables.

1. Get tablecovers with a tropical design or if that is not possible get a plain blue tablecover or table roll and on top of it place hawaiian beach towels.
2. Scatter some sea shells and old nettong on the table
3. Fill empty jars with sand and shells and place a candle in them but be careful that the jars do nor crack
4. Use scene setters and cutouts. These can be used both indoors and outdoors (weather permitting)
5. Drape garlands and leis around anything that is stationary for more than 5 seconds

In summary, when decorating a venue for am Hawaiian party, turn down the lights and and try to recreate a tropical / beach atmosphere.
